ELET refers to individuals aged 18 to 24 who have attained, at most, a lower secondary education and are not engaged in further education or training. Reducing ELET is a national priority because early school leaving can limit career opportunities, increase the risk of unemployment, and contribute to social inequality. In this regard, Malta’s ELET Strategy focuses on three key areas:
✔️ Prevention – Ensuring students remain engaged in education.
✔️ Intervention – Providing timely support to at-risk students.
✔️ Compensation – Offering alternative learning pathways for those who have left school.
The Early Leaving from Education and Training (ELET) Unit implements key initiatives, including:
✔️ Early Warning System – Identifying at-risk students early
✔️ Whole-School Approach – Engaging all school stakeholders to prevent dropout
✔️ Parental Engagement – Strengthening family-school links to support students. Parental engagement is crucial. Encouraging regular attendance, providing emotional support, and working with educators can significantly help students stay in school.
✔️ Family-Community-School Link Programme – Working closely with schools, educators, and families to provide early intervention, guidance, and support to students.
Yes! The DPSF conducts professional development sessions for educators. These sessions provide the tools needed to identify and assist students at risk of early school leaving. Our training covers key topics, including:
✔️ Recognising Early Leaving from Education and Training (ELET) risk factors
✔️ Implementing effective early intervention strategies
✔️ Creating an inclusive and engaging learning environment
✔️ Strengthening school-family-community partnerships
Additionally, through the FCSL Programme, DPSF organises outreach activities in schools tailored to support families with informative and engaging sessions. As the programme is currently in its pilot phase, these activities are limited to participating schools.
